Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a high prevalances metabolic disease, which leads to serious damage to the body’s organs. Streptozotocin (STZ) is diabetogenic agents that is used for induction of diabetes mellitus in animals. Garlic chemical compounds, allicin, has a role as an antidiabetic agent. Moreover, garlic has potential as an antioxidant and antiinflammation that can reduce oxidative damage caused by diabetes mellitus. The aims of this study is to determine the effect of garlic extract (Allium sativum) on morphology of myocardium in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Sprague dawley strain induced by streptozotocin. This study is an experimental study with a Post Test Only Control Group Design. The samples are 28 rats that divided randomly into 4 groups, KN (Normal group), K- (STZ 60mg/kg), P1 (STZ 60 mg/kg + Garlic extract 500 mg/kg), P2 (STZ 60 mg/kg + Garlic extract 750 mg/kg). Histological changes were scored based on Dallas criteria. The study showed that lowest score of heart damage was found in KN, Meanwhile the highest one was found in K- group. The score of heart damage was decrease in P1 and P2. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference among four group of sample with the p value=0.000 (p<0.05). The Mann-Whitney Post Hoc test showed a significant difference between all pairs of group, except between P1 and P2 group with  the significancy value is 0.545 (p>0.05). There is an effect of garlic extract (Allium sativum) on morphology of myocardium in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Sprague dawley strain induced by streptozotocin.
