The Association Between Patient Satisfaction and Medication Adherence Among Outpatients With Hypertension: A Systematic Literature Review

Patient satisfaction is a critical indicator in evaluating healthcare quality, particularly in hospital pharmacy services that directly influence treatment effectiveness. Hypertension, as a prevalent chronic disease, requires consistent medication adherence to prevent serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and renal failure. This review aims to analyze the relationship between outpatient hypertension patients’ satisfaction with pharmacy services and their level of medication adherence. The findings indicate that key dimensions of service quality, including reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles, play a significant role in shaping patient perceptions and experiences. Patients who report higher levels of satisfaction tend to demonstrate better adherence to prescribed antihypertensive medications. Factors such as clear communication from pharmacists, efficient service delivery, and personalized patient care contribute positively to adherence behavior. In addition, ongoing patient education and supportive interactions help strengthen trust and understanding, which are essential for long-term treatment compliance. Improving pharmacy service quality not only enhances patient satisfaction but also has a direct impact on clinical outcomes and disease management. Therefore, healthcare providers should prioritize patient-centered approaches in pharmacy services to support optimal hypertension control and improve overall quality of care in outpatient settings.
