Abstract

Burnout in students refers to emotional exhaustion caused by the demands of learning and the feeling of being an incompetent student. Individuals who have higher emotional intelligence are able to regulate their emotions to prevent prolonged emotional exhaustion that can lead to burnout. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation of emotional intelligence on the occurrence of burnout among final year medical students in University of Lampung. This study was a correlative analysis with a cross sectional design. The subject in this study were 237 final year students taken with total sampling. SEIS (Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale) questionnaire and MBI-SS (Masclach Burnout Inventory Student Survey) questionnaire were used to measure emotional intelligence and burnout. The data was processed with computer software using Gamma test. Univariate analysis showed 51,1% of respondents have high emotional intelligence, 48,9% of respondents have moderate emotional intelligence, and no respondents have low emotional intelligence. There were 22,4% of respondents with burnout were and 77,6% of respondents with no burnout. The Gamma test showed p value = 0,011 and r= - 0,38. There is a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and burnout in final year medical students in University of Lampung with a weak correlation power.
