Strabismus is an occurrence where the eyes are not in a parallel position when looking at an object. This is a disorder that is quite common, especially in children. This occurs when the eyes are not in their normal alignment and point in different directions. The process of eye movement involves the extraocular muscles which are innervated by several cranial nerves. Globally, strabismus is found in the general population at 0.3-7.6% and depends on country, ethnicity, and age group. At the age of 4-10 years, the prevalence of strabismus sufferers is 2-4%. Whereas in adults the distribution of strabismus sufferers ranges from 4-5.6%. For the elderly, the distribution is at 0.68%. The pathophysiology of strabismus has several theories, including the theories of Claude Worth and Chavasse. But for the cause in children, there are several influencing factors. Factors that contribute to strabismus in children start from a family history of similar diseases, the lifestyle of the mother who smokes, the age of the mother during pregnancy, premature birth and other predisposing factors.
