Review Article: Antibacterial Activity of Moringa Leaf Extract (Moringa oleifera L.) Against Staphylococcus aureus

Infectious diseases are the main cause of high morbidity and mortality in developing countries. One of the therapies that can be used to treat infectious diseases is antibiotics. However, the irrational use of antibiotics can lead to the problem of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to find sources of natural drugs that have the potential as antibacterial agents. One of the medicinal plants is moringa (Moringa oleifera L.). Staphylococcus aureus is a normal human flora, but it can be pathogenic and cause infection in abnormal conditions. The severity of Staphylococcus aureus infection ranges from mild skin infection to severe necrotizing pneumonia. This article aims to determine whether moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera L.) can inhibit bacterial growth and what concentration of moringa leaf extract can provide the best antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. From the study results, it was known that moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera L.) proved to have good potential as an antibacterial, indicated by the presence of an inhibition zone formed. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) contain phytochemicals such as tannins, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, anthraquinones, and alkaloids. These components are known to have strong potential as antibacterial agents with different mechanisms of action. Moringa leaf extract showed the best antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 75% with an inhibition zone diameter of 23 mm.
