Abstract

Preeclampsia is a collection of symptoms in pregnant women which include hypertension, protein in the urine and edema that occurs at a gestational age of more than 20 weeks or after delivery. Preeclampsia can result in the second highest Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) after bleeding during childbirth. The exact cause of preeclampsia is still unknown, but there are several risk factors that can influence preeclampsia, such as history of hypertension, age, parity, obesity, and history of diabetes mellitus. Mothers aged <20 years or > 35 years and their first pregnancy have the possibility of preeclampsia. Pregnant women with obesity are also at risk of experiencing preeclampsia due to an increase in LDL and a decrease in HDL. Mothers who have a history of diabetes mellitus have a 4.742 times chance of developing preeclampsia compared to mothers without a history of diabetes mellitus and mothers who have a history of hypertension have a 7.38 times chance of developing preeclampsia when compared to mothers without a history of hypertension.
